“I honestly thought I knew everything about Puerto Ricans. The ignorant side of me thought Puerto Ricans had it easier than other Latino communities because they are automatically U.S. citizens even though they were born in Puerto Rico. I was so wrong.” -Sonia Gandara, “Viva Puerto Rico! The history of Puerto Ricans in Chicago” -Chicago Examiner
“Discrimination, poor education, poverty and an absence of political representation-it's the story of countless ethnic groups that have come to the United States....” - Timothy Inklebarger, “Lights, Camera, Puerto Rico!” -Chicago Journal
“I want to give many thanks to Antonio & Gloricelly Franceschi for telling the "'Chicago Puerto Rican Story'. My family and I gathered last night to watch this documentary and were amazed on our history as Puerto Ricans and how we came to Chicago. I learned so much from this and didn't realize the struggles that we Puerto Ricans went through at this time. Thank you WTTW Chicago for airing this documentary and letting us Puerto Ricans know more about ourselves.” -A proud Puerto Rican, Oak Park, IL
Bravo on your latest work, "Chicago's Puerto Rican Story!" I rushed from work to join my brother to see it and it was worth it! It was a powerful and educational viewing experience for me. What I learned from it was what was most valuable--The struggles that make us like so many other immigrants, but also our humble nature pushed to action by injustice…Mil gracias!” -Lourdes, Humboldt Park Resident
This film was extraordinary in telling the struggles of my mom and dad when they migrated here to the United States in the early 60's. Watching this film for me was very emotional, because the story I was always telling my daughters was better told with this documentary. Thank you and great job! -Tony Ruiz
